What is a TV screen test?

A TV screen test fills your television with solid colours and greys so you can check the panel. Large TVs show faults like dirty screen effect and clouding that are harder to notice on smaller screens.

Open this page in your smart TV web browser, or cast a laptop browser tab to the TV. Then look at each colour from your normal seat and from up close.

How to test your TV

1

Open it on the TV

Use the TV browser, or connect a laptop by HDMI and press F for fullscreen.

2

Turn off processing

Switch off energy saving, dynamic contrast and motion smoothing for a fair result.

3

Check each colour

Step through the colours with the remote or → key. Look for dots, bands and darker areas.

What faults look like on a TV

Darker vertical bands on grey

Dirty screen effect, common on large LED and LCD TVs, most visible in sports.

Cloudy patches on black

Clouding or backlight bleed. Check it in a dark room.

Dot that stays lit on black

A stuck or hot pixel.

Faint logo shapes on OLED

Burn-in from channel logos or game HUDs. Try the OLED screen test too.
