What is a laptop screen test?

A laptop screen test checks the built-in display of a notebook. Laptop panels are thin and the screen flexes with the lid, so faults can show up near the hinge, along the bottom edge or after the lid has been opened many times.

Use it on a new laptop, when buying a used one, or after a screen repair. The colours show dead and stuck pixels, while the black screen shows light leaking from the bottom bezel.

How to test a laptop screen

1

Plug in the charger

Many laptops dim the screen on battery. Set brightness to full.

2

Start the test

Click the Start button or press F. The first colour fills the laptop screen.

3

Move the lid gently

While a colour is showing, tilt the lid slowly. Lines or flicker that change as it moves can point to a loose display cable.

What to look for on a laptop

Black dot on white

A dead pixel in the laptop panel.

Glow along the bottom edge

Light bleed near the hinge is common on laptops. Small amounts are normal.

Lines or flicker when you move the lid

Often a worn or loose display cable rather than the panel itself.

Yellow patch or pressure marks

Marks from the keyboard or pressure on the lid can leave lighter patches.
