What to look for

  • Smooth ramp: it should fade evenly with no stripes or colour tint.
  • Steps: every step should look different from its neighbours.
  • Near-black and near-white: count how many squares you can tell apart.

What is a greyscale test?

A greyscale test shows shades of grey from pure black to pure white. A good screen shows every shade as neutral grey, and each step looks a little different from the one next to it.

This greyscale test has a smooth horizontal and vertical ramp, 16 and 32 grey steps, and two sets of patches: values 1 to 20 on black and 235 to 254 on white. Together they show colour tint in the greys, shades that merge together, and whether your brightness and contrast settings crush the darkest or brightest tones.

How to run this test

1

Set up the screen

Turn off night light or blue light filters, and use your normal brightness.

2

Start the test

Click the Start button or press F. The smooth grey ramp opens fullscreen.

3

Step through the screens

Click, tap or press → for the next screen. Use the test screens list to jump to one. Press Esc to exit.

What the grey screens tell you

Pink, green or blue tint

Greys that are not neutral point to a white balance or colour temperature setting, or an uneven panel.

Steps that look the same

If neighbouring steps merge, your screen is losing shades. Adjust brightness and contrast, then check again.

Few squares visible on black

If you only see squares from 10 or 15 up, shadow detail is being crushed. Raise brightness a little.

Few squares visible on white

If the top squares disappear into white, highlights are clipped. Lower contrast a little.

Frequently asked questions

Is this test the same as a grayscale test?

Yes. Greyscale and grayscale are the British and American spellings of the same thing.

What does this test show?

Whether your screen shows neutral greys and keeps dark and light shades apart. It does not measure exact colour values; that needs a hardware colorimeter.

Why do my greys look slightly coloured?

Night light, a warm colour mode or the panel itself can tint greys. Turn off filters and try the standard or sRGB picture mode.

Does it work on phones and TVs?

Yes. Open it in any modern browser and tap to move through the screens.
