What is a dead pixel test?

A dead pixel test shows a series of solid fullscreen colours: white, black, red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow and gray. Each colour lights the subpixels in a different way, so a faulty pixel stands out against at least one of them.

Run this test when you buy a new or used monitor, laptop, phone or TV, ideally before the return window closes. It takes under a minute and needs nothing but your browser.

How to run the test

1

Clean the screen

Remove dust so it does not look like a pixel fault.

2

Start the test

Click the Start button or press F. The first colour opens fullscreen.

3

Step through the colours

Click, tap or press → for the next colour. Press Esc to stop.

What a dead, stuck or hot pixel looks like

Dead pixel

A black dot on bright colours. The pixel gets no power and usually cannot be fixed.

Stuck pixel

A dot stuck on red, green, blue or another colour. Stuck pixels sometimes recover; try the stuck pixel fixer on the home page.

Hot pixel

A bright white dot on the black screen.

Dust or a scratch

A spot that moves when you wipe the screen or looks the same on every colour is on the surface, not a pixel.

Frequently asked questions

How many dead pixels are acceptable?

It depends on the maker. Many brands replace a monitor only above a set number of faulty pixels, so check your warranty terms.

Can a dead pixel be fixed?

A truly dead pixel usually cannot. A stuck pixel can sometimes be revived with flashing colours or gentle pressure.

Does the test work on phones?

Yes. It works on phones and tablets: tap to go to the next colour and tap × to exit.

Is my screen data uploaded?

No. The test runs in your browser and nothing leaves your device.
