What is an LCD screen test?
An LCD screen uses a backlight shining through a layer of liquid crystals. An LCD screen test shows solid colours and dark shades that reveal the typical faults of this design: light leaking at the edges, clouding, uneven brightness and faulty pixels.
Use it on LCD monitors, laptops and TVs, including IPS, VA and TN panels. OLED screens work differently and have their own OLED screen test.
How to test an LCD screen
1
Warm up the screen
Leave the screen on for a few minutes so the backlight settles.
2
Run the colours
Click the Start button or press F, then step through the colours.
3
Check black in the dark
Turn off the lights and look at the black screen for bleed, glow and clouding.
What LCD faults look like
Glow in the corners that stays put
Backlight bleed, where light leaks around the edge of the panel.
Glow that changes with your angle
IPS glow, a normal trait of IPS panels.
Patchy brightness on white or grey
Poor backlight uniformity.
Dot that never changes
A stuck or dead pixel in the liquid crystal layer.
IPS, VA and TN panels
IPS panels have wide viewing angles but show glow in dark scenes. VA panels have deeper blacks and less glow but can smear in motion. TN panels change colour when you look from an angle. Each type passes this test differently, so compare like with like.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between LCD and LED screens?
Most "LED" monitors and TVs are LCD panels with an LED backlight, so this test applies to them.
Is IPS glow a defect?
No. It is normal for IPS panels. Backlight bleed that stays in one place is the fault to look for.
Do LCD screens get burn-in?
Rarely. They can show temporary image retention, which usually fades after a while.
Which panel type has the least bleed?
It varies by model. VA panels often show less glow but can show more black smearing in motion.
