What is a monitor screen test?

A monitor screen test is a quick check you run on a desktop monitor, usually right after you unpack it or before you buy a used one. It cycles through solid fullscreen colours so faults in the panel stand out.

Start here when you get a new monitor, and run it again before the return window closes. Then use the backlight bleed, refresh rate and ghosting tests to check the rest of what makes a good monitor.

How to test your monitor

1

Connect at native resolution

Use the cable that came with the monitor and set the resolution it recommends.

2

Reset the picture mode

Pick the standard mode and turn off night light so colours are not tinted.

3

Run the colours

Click the Start button or press F, then step through all 9 colours with → or a click.

What faults look like on a monitor

Dots that stay black

Dead pixels. Note the colour and position for a warranty claim.

Coloured dots that never change

Stuck pixels. Try the stuck pixel fixer on the home page.

Bright edges on black

Backlight bleed. Confirm it with the backlight bleed test in a dark room.

Darker or tinted areas on white

Uneven backlight or panel uniformity.

Before your return window closes

Most shops accept returns for a short time after delivery. Test the monitor on day one, take a photo of any fault on the matching colour screen, and keep it with your receipt.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check on a new monitor?

Dead and stuck pixels, backlight bleed, uniformity, the refresh rate and that the resolution matches the box.

How do I test a used monitor before buying?

Bring a laptop, open this page on the monitor and run the colours. Then check the black screen for bleed and the refresh rate test for Hz.

Is my monitor at its full refresh rate?

Run the refresh rate test. If it shows 60 Hz on a faster monitor, change the rate in your display settings.

Does the test change any monitor settings?

No. It only shows colours in your browser.
