What is a black screen test?

A black screen test fills your whole display with pure black (#000000). On a perfect screen nothing lights up. Anything you can see, such as a bright dot, a coloured speck or a glow at the edges, is a fault or a limit of the panel.

This test is the quickest way to find hot and stuck pixels, check for backlight bleed or IPS glow on LCD monitors, and confirm that an OLED screen turns its pixels fully off. You can also use a pure black screen to clean your display, since dust and smudges are easier to see on it.

How to run the test

1

Dim the room

Turn off the lights or close the curtains so small leaks of light are easy to see.

2

Start the test

Click the Start button or press F. The page goes fullscreen in pure black.

3

Look closely, then exit

Scan the screen from edge to edge. Press Esc or tap × to leave fullscreen.

How to read your results

Bright or coloured dot

A dot that stays lit on black is a hot or stuck pixel. Note where it is and check it again on the white and red screens.

Glow at the edges or corners

Patches of light along the edges are backlight bleed. Some bleed is normal on LCD screens; large bright patches are not.

Glow that moves with your head

If the glow changes when you move, it is IPS glow, a normal trait of IPS panels, not a defect.

Completely black

On an OLED screen the whole panel should look switched off. On LCD a faint even gray is normal.

Frequently asked questions

Is this test free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no app or sign-up, and nothing is uploaded.

Does a black screen save battery?

On OLED and AMOLED screens black pixels are switched off, so a black screen uses very little power. On LCD screens the backlight stays on, so it saves almost nothing.

Can I use a black screen to clean my display?

Yes. Dust, fingerprints and streaks show up clearly on black, so it is a handy guide while you wipe the screen.

How do I exit the black screen?

Press Esc on a keyboard, or tap the × button in the top right corner on a phone or tablet.
